Bubble vs Webflow vs custom code comes down to what your MVP has to do. Webflow is a website builder with no native user logins since January 29, 2026, so it can’t run a SaaS product. Bubble ships a logged-in app in weeks. Custom code wins when the product’s core is logic, integrations or data you must own.
Most comparison pages treat Webflow and Bubble as two flavors of the same no-code tool and add “custom code” as the expensive option at the end. That picture is out of date. Webflow has spent the last eighteen months removing app features and adding a host for coded apps, Bubble has pushed into AI and native mobile, and a custom-code first version is faster to start than it was. The decision is now about which layer of your product each tool should own.
Webflow builds your site, not your SaaS
Webflow is the best of the three for the public website: marketing pages, the blog, docs and landing pages your marketing team can edit without an engineer. For the product behind the login, three facts rule it out.
- No native logins. Webflow switched off User Accounts on January 29, 2026. PandaCodegen’s write-up of the User Accounts sunset lists what stopped: members could no longer log in, content gates were removed and account pages turned static.
- No native logic. Webflow Logic, its built-in automation tool, was retired on June 27, 2025, per the same write-up.
- The CMS is a content store. Webflow merged its CMS and Business plans into one Premium plan in May 2026, and Webflow’s announcement of the new plans puts its limit at 20,000 CMS items across 40 collections. That’s plenty for a blog and small for user data: 4,000 users who each create five records fill it.
Webflow’s answer for apps is Webflow Cloud. The Webflow Cloud docs describe it as a hosting environment for Next.js, Astro and Vite apps, with SQLite, key-value and object storage, deployable next to a Webflow site or on its own. That’s useful, but it’s custom code you write, with Webflow as the host. It also comes with an edge runtime’s constraints: Webflow Cloud’s published limits cap execution at 30 seconds per request and memory at 128 MB per worker, and SQLite storage runs from 100 MB on the lower plans to 1 GB on Business. Fine for a light app. Tight for an LLM pipeline or a heavy report.
Bubble ships a logged-in MVP fastest
Bubble puts a database, user accounts, workflows, an API connector and payments plugins in one editor. For a non-technical founder validating a product with standard CRUD, a dashboard and Stripe, nothing gets a working logged-in app live faster.
Cost is usage-based. Bubble’s pricing page lists Starter at $59 a month (billed annually) with 175,000 workload units, Growth at $209 with 250,000 and Team at $549 with 500,000. Workload is Bubble’s meter for the server resources your app uses, and Bubble’s workload docs say that past your allowance you buy extra workload tiers or let the app scale automatically. The bill tracks usage, which is cheap at launch and less predictable later.
The cost that doesn’t show on the pricing page is the exit. Bubble’s own docs on app ownership say there’s no way to export an application as code: you can pull your data as CSV or through the API, and that’s all you take with you. In Bubble’s January 2026 founder AMA, co-CEO Emmanuel Straschnov argued that every platform carries some lock-in and restated Bubble’s commitment to release its source code if the company ever fails, and code export wasn’t on the list of 2026 priorities. So choose Bubble knowing that leaving later means rebuilding the logic. We’ve covered the four thresholds that trigger that move in when to rebuild your Bubble app.
Custom code wins when logic is the product
Build in code from day one when the thing that makes your product valuable is something a visual builder handles badly:
- An AI or data core. LLM pipelines, retrieval, scoring, long-running jobs. These need queues, retries, evals and cost controls that a workflow editor doesn’t give you.
- Integrations are the product. In our experience Bubble’s API Connector is comfortable up to about five integrations. A product that syncs with ten systems needs proper retry logic and error visibility from the start.
- Regulated data or diligence ahead. If you handle health or financial data, or expect a technical review in a raise or sale within a year, you want infrastructure and access controls you can show line by line.
- You already have an engineer. Then Bubble’s speed advantage mostly disappears and you keep all of its lock-in.
The speed gap has narrowed. Our MVP Sprint for custom-code products runs 5-6 weeks at one fixed price agreed before the build, starting at $12,000, and you own the code. What still favors Bubble is the upfront cost for a founder who hasn’t validated yet. AI app generators sit in between: they produce code you own, but we see the same defects in them again and again, covered in Lovable vs Bolt vs Cursor in production.
Better Analyst (formerly FormulaBot) is the counter-example to Bubble: an LLM product with 40+ data connectors and 1.5M+ users, built in code because the query engine and the connectors are the product.
Bubble vs Webflow vs custom code, by situation
| Your situation | Pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Marketing site, blog, waitlist | Webflow | Best visual editor for pages your marketing team owns |
| Logged-in MVP, standard CRUD, Stripe, 1-3 integrations, no engineer | Bubble | Database, auth and workflows in one editor; live in weeks |
| AI, data processing or long-running jobs at the core | Custom code | Needs queues, evals and cost controls a builder can’t give you |
| More than about five integrations | Custom code | Retries, rate limits and error visibility are Bubble’s weak spot |
| Regulated data, or a raise or sale within 12 months | Custom code | Diligence asks what you own and how it’s secured |
| Already on Bubble and the bill or speed is hurting | Stay, optimize or migrate in pieces | See the four rebuild thresholds |
The setup most SaaS teams land on: Webflow on the main domain for marketing, and the product (Bubble or code) on an app subdomain. Your marketing team keeps shipping pages without touching the app, and you can swap the app layer later without breaking the URLs Google has indexed.
How Glibzter shipped on Bubble in 6 weeks
Glibzter is a two-sided coaching platform: scored assessments with progress tracking, a video and audio course player, 1:1 coach booking with reminders, and Stripe checkout for both courses and consulting packages. Two product surfaces share one auth, one wallet and one content backbone. We built the application layer on Bubble in 6 weeks.
Bubble fit because nothing in that product needed code. The data model is users, courses, assessments and bookings; the one heavy integration is Stripe; and the founder wanted to iterate on the product surface quickly. Webflow couldn’t have hosted it without logins and a wallet. Custom code would have cost more for no user-facing gain at that stage.
The same logic runs the other way. Better Analyst’s query engine was never going to live in a workflow editor, and the Bubble apps we look at in our 100+ security and performance audits usually get into trouble when the product has grown past what the platform was picked for. The starting choice was often fine. Pick the tool for the product you’re building in the next twelve months, and write down now what would make you move.
Frequently asked questions
- Can you build a SaaS product on Webflow?
- Not on Webflow's no-code tools alone. Webflow switched off its native User Accounts on January 29, 2026, retired Logic in June 2025, and even its top Site plan, Premium, includes 20,000 CMS items, a limit sized for content, not user data. You can host a coded Next.js, Astro or Vite app on Webflow Cloud, but that is custom code with Webflow as the host. Use Webflow for the marketing site.
- Is Bubble better than Webflow for an MVP?
- For a logged-in product, yes. Bubble gives you a database, user accounts, workflows and payments in one editor, so a founder can ship a working app in weeks. Webflow is the better tool for the public website: pages, blog, landing pages and SEO. Many SaaS teams run both, with Webflow on the main domain and the app on a subdomain.
- How much does Bubble cost for a SaaS MVP?
- Bubble's paid web plans start at $59 a month billed annually for the Starter plan, which includes 175,000 workload units. Growth is $209 a month with 250,000 units and Team is $549 a month with 500,000. Workload measures the server work your app does, so the bill grows with usage. Past your allowance, you buy extra workload tiers.
- Can I export my Bubble app's code later?
- No. Bubble does not export source code. You can export database records as CSV or pull them through the Data API, and duplicate the app inside Bubble, but there is no way to export the app itself as code. Leaving Bubble means rebuilding the application logic in code, which is why the exit plan belongs in the original platform decision.
- When should a startup skip no-code and build in custom code from day one?
- When the product's core is logic no visual builder handles well: an LLM pipeline, heavy data processing, long-running jobs, or a dense web of integrations. Also when you handle regulated data, face technical due diligence within a year, or already have an engineer. A custom-code MVP costs more upfront but has no rebuild waiting for you later.
