# Claude Haiku 5.5 cost: what to move and what breaks

Anthropic cut its small model's price tenfold on October 7. Here's what that does to your product's AI bill, and what to fix before you switch.

Claude Haiku 5.5 cost is $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens, a tenth of Haiku 4.5’s rates. Anthropic [released it on October 7, 2026](https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-haiku-5-5). For classification, extraction and support features, switch. Budget for a tokenizer that counts about 30% more tokens, and for requests that now fail.

The release has kept developers talking for a week because it changes the math on every high-volume AI feature. If your product sends each support ticket, uploaded document or search query through a small model, the bill for that feature can drop by most of its size. But the price page is only half the story: the new model counts tokens differently, thinks by default, and rejects several request settings that Haiku 4.5 accepted. We haven’t moved a client product to Haiku 5.5 yet, so the numbers below come from Anthropic’s own pages, as of October 15, 2026, plus how we’d run the switch.

## Claude Haiku 5.5 cost at MVP scale

Anthropic’s [pricing page](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/pricing) lists two rate cards for Haiku 5.5. Prompts of 100,000 tokens or less pay $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens. Prompts over 100,000 pay $0.50 and $2.50. Haiku 4.5 is $1 and $5, and Sonnet 5.5 is $2 and $10. Cache reads on short Haiku 5.5 prompts cost $0.01 per million, and the Batch API halves the base rates.

Per-token prices don’t tell a founder much, so here’s a product. Say you have 10,000 monthly active users and each triggers 30 AI requests a month: 300,000 requests. Each request sends 3,000 tokens of prompt and gets 300 tokens back, measured on Haiku 4.5. The [migration guide](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/models/haiku-5-5/migration-guide) says the same text produces about 30% more tokens on Haiku 5.5, so the same request counts as 3,900 in and 390 out on the newer models.

ModelMonthly billPer active user

Claude Haiku 4.5$1,350$0.135

Claude Haiku 5.5, thinking off$175.50about $0.018

Claude Haiku 5.5, plus 500 thinking tokens per request$250.50about $0.025

Claude Sonnet 5.5, thinking off$3,510$0.351

These are estimates at list prices, before caching or batching. The 30% tokenizer factor is Anthropic’s average, and your content will land somewhere around it. Even with thinking tokens added, Haiku 5.5 runs at under a fifth of the Haiku 4.5 bill for this feature. At this scale, the model stops being a line item you plan pricing around.

If you priced a paid tier or a free plan’s usage cap around Haiku 4.5 costs, those limits now have room. That’s the business change worth acting on, more than the saving itself.

## Three things eat into the discount

Anthropic says Haiku 5.5 costs “around 75% less to run” than Haiku 4.5 on average, which is smaller than the 90% cut in list price. Three things eat into the headline cut, and each one is in your control.

**The tokenizer.** Every prompt counts more tokens, and a `max_tokens` limit holds less text. Large images cost more as well: the migration guide gives the example of a 2,000 by 1,500 pixel image costing about 2.5 times as many visual tokens as on Haiku 4.5, because Haiku 5.5 uses a higher-resolution image tier. If your feature reads screenshots or scanned documents, recount on your own inputs before you trust any estimate.

**The 100,000-token line.** The higher rate applies to the whole request once its prompt passes 100,000 tokens, cache reads included. A retrieval prompt that measured 80,000 tokens on Haiku 4.5 can measure about 104,000 on Haiku 5.5. That request costs about $0.052 in input, against $0.08 on Haiku 4.5. Trim it to 99,000 tokens and it costs about $0.0099. Cutting a few retrieved chunks is worth a 5x price difference, so cap your context size in code, not by habit.

**Thinking.** Haiku 5.5 thinks by default, and thinking tokens bill as output. Anthropic’s [effort docs](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/build-with-claude/effort) set `medium` as the default and recommend `low` for chat, short tool tasks and simple high-volume requests. You can also turn thinking off at `high` effort or below. For a classifier or an extractor, start at `low` or with thinking off, and raise it only where your evals show a gain.

## Move high-volume, input-bound features first

Anthropic’s [models overview](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/models/overview) describes Haiku 5.5 as built “for high-volume, latency-sensitive tasks such as classification, extraction, and routing”. The launch post adds summaries, database queries, live customer support, browser use and subagent work, and says Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 stay better for complex agentic coding.

Anthropic’s own benchmark table backs that split. On Terminal-Bench 4.0, Anthropic reports 39.2% for Haiku 5.5 against 70.6% for Sonnet 5.5. On the offline OSWorld 2.1 subset, it reports 72.4% for Haiku 5.5, up from 15.7% for Haiku 4.5. Those are vendor numbers on vendor-chosen tests, so read them as a direction and confirm on your own data.

In product terms, the order we’d move features in:

- **Ticket routing, tagging, intent detection and moderation.** The answer sits in the input, volume is high, and the output is short. Move these first, at low effort.
- **Field extraction from documents and forms.** Pair it with structured outputs so malformed JSON can’t happen, as covered in our piece on [choosing a model by task type](https://zeroic.in/blog/gpt-vs-claude-vs-llama-production).
- **Summaries and short support replies.** Move them once a side-by-side eval on a few hundred of your own inputs holds quality.
- **Long agent loops, code generation and multi-step tool use.** Leave these on Sonnet 5.5 until your evals say otherwise.

If a feature only picks from a fixed list, a decision model may still beat any LLM on cost and latency. Our [Jev vs LLM comparison](https://zeroic.in/blog/jev-vs-llm-decision-model) priced that against Haiku 4.5. Haiku 5.5 narrows that cost gap, so rerun the numbers before you pick.

## Haiku 4.5 code breaks in six places

Haiku 5.5 is not a drop-in model ID swap. The migration guide lists the changes, and these six are the ones most products hit:

1. **Sampling parameters.** `temperature`, `top_p` and `top_k` return a 400 error at anything other than their defaults. The Python SDK from v1.0 removes them, so passing them raises a `TypeError` before the request is sent.
2. **Thinking budgets.** `thinking: {"type": "enabled", "budget_tokens": N}` returns a 400 error. Use adaptive thinking and set effort instead.
3. **Assistant prefill.** A request that ends with an assistant turn for the model to continue returns a 400 error, even with thinking off. Move format control to structured outputs and continuations into the user turn.
4. **Response parsing.** A response can start with one or more thinking blocks. Code that reads the first content block as the answer breaks; select blocks by `type`.
5. **`max_tokens` limits.** Thinking counts toward `max_tokens`, so a small limit tuned for Haiku 4.5 can stop with `stop_reason: "max_tokens"` before any text. Raise it or lower effort.
6. **Refusals.** Haiku 5.5 runs safety classifiers that can return `stop_reason: "refusal"`, with no server-side fallback. Handle it like any other error path in your UI.

Two platform gaps matter for some teams. Structured outputs aren’t available for Haiku 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock, and Priority Tier commitments on Haiku 4.5 don’t carry over. If either applies, plan the switch around it.

There’s no forced deadline. As of October 15, 2026, Anthropic’s [model deprecations page](https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/about-claude/model-deprecations) lists Haiku 4.5 as active with retirement “not sooner than October 15, 2026”, and promises at least 60 days’ notice before retiring a publicly released model. Move for the price, once your evals pass.

## Haiku 5.5 decision guide for founders

- **Your feature classifies, routes, extracts or summarizes, with prompts under 100,000 tokens.** Switch to Haiku 5.5 at low effort, after a side-by-side eval.
- **Your prompts sit near 100,000 tokens on Haiku 4.5.** Recount on Haiku 5.5 first. Cap retrieval so requests stay under the line, or price the long tier in.
- **Your feature runs long agent loops or writes code.** Stay on Sonnet 5.5, and test Haiku 5.5 as a subagent for the cheap steps.
- **You’re on Bedrock and depend on strict structured outputs.** Wait, or validate the output in your own code before you switch.
- **You set `temperature`, use prefill or parse the first content block.** Fix those first. They fail on the first request.
- **Your feature is a pure pick-from-a-list decision at very high volume.** Price a decision model against Haiku 5.5 before you commit to either.

## How Better Analyst isolated AI inference for 1.5M+ users

A model release this large is a test of how your code is laid out. On [Better Analyst (formerly FormulaBot)](https://zeroic.in/formulabot), one of our biggest jobs was splitting AI inference, data processing and the user-facing API into independently deployable services. That split is what let the platform scale from thousands to 1.5M+ users.

It also changes what a model switch costs. When inference lives in one service, the model ID, request settings and response parsing live in one place, and a migration like this one is a change to a single service with its own deploy and its own rollback. When model calls are scattered through the codebase, each of the six breaking changes above becomes a search across every file that talks to an LLM. If that describes your product, an [AI audit](https://zeroic.in/services/ai-audit) is the fastest way to find every call, the tier each one needs, and what moving it would save.

## Frequently asked questions

**How much does Claude Haiku 5.5 cost per million tokens?**

Claude Haiku 5.5 costs $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens when the prompt is 100,000 tokens or less. Above that line every token in the request bills at $0.50 input and $2.50 output. Cache reads are $0.01 per million on short prompts, and the Batch API halves the base rates to $0.05 and $0.25.

**Is Claude Haiku 5.5 cheaper than Haiku 4.5 once the tokenizer is counted?**

Yes, by a wide margin on short prompts. Haiku 5.5 counts about 30% more tokens for the same text, but its per-token price is a tenth of Haiku 4.5's, so the short request in this article's example costs about 87% less with thinking off. Long prompts narrow the gap: one that crosses 100,000 tokens after recounting pays five times the short-prompt rate.

**What breaks when you switch from Claude Haiku 4.5 to Haiku 5.5?**

Requests that set temperature, top_p or top_k to non-default values, use a thinking budget_tokens value, or end with an assistant prefill all return a 400 error. Thinking is on by default, so responses can start with a thinking block and small max_tokens limits can run out before any text. Code that reads the first content block as the answer needs to select by type.

**Is Claude Haiku 5.5 or Sonnet 5.5 better for a SaaS product?**

Use Haiku 5.5 for classification, extraction, routing, summaries and short support replies, where volume is high and the answer sits in the input. Keep Sonnet 5.5 for complex agentic work and long multistep tool use. Anthropic's own Terminal-Bench 4.0 results put Haiku 5.5 at 39.2% against 70.6% for Sonnet 5.5.

**Do you have to migrate off Claude Haiku 4.5 now?**

No. As of October 15, 2026, Anthropic's deprecations page lists Claude Haiku 4.5 as active, with retirement not sooner than October 15, 2026, and Anthropic gives at least 60 days' notice before retiring a publicly released model. The reason to move is the price, so plan the switch around your own evals and release schedule.
